Raymond Hill, the extension’s creator, author, and primary developer began work on the first version of uBlock in 2014 by forking the codebase of HTTP Switchboard with a new blocking extension called uMatrix. By default, EasyList, and EasyPrivacy, two of the most widely used filter lists, as well as URLHaus, a blocklist of malicious domains, are activated. A user of uBlock Origin discovered a fresh method that certain websites employ to evade third-party tracker blocking in November 2019. Sites like these use CNAME records to transfer traffic from their subdomains to external hosts. Given that the starting point of the URL was a subdomain of the currently loaded website, browsers treated it as a first-party request and so sent it through uBlock Origin’s filters (and in similar extensions). Using a DNS API that is exclusive to Firefox 60+, the creator of uBlock Origin devised a workaround. On February 19, 2020, uBlock Origin 1.25 was published with the new function.
Performance
Reviews from tech publications and end users have consistently praised uBlock Origin for using fewer system resources than competitors like Adblock Plus. In a comparison test of ten blocking extensions performed in August of 2015, uBlock Origin was found to be the most sparing of system resources.
Instead of using a global style sheet, uBlock Origin determines which specific style resources are needed for each page. Rather than having to constantly retrieve filters from the cache, the extension just takes a snapshot of the ones the user has activated, which helps the browser launch faster.
