What are the Ideal Instagram Ratios?

The dimensions of videos and photos uploaded to Instagram change based on the orientation of the media and the uploading app. Take a look at this quick rundown of the most popular Instagram photo and video dimensions:

It was only possible to upload photographs with a 1:1 aspect ratio when Instagram originally began in 2012 (wow, that was a long time ago!).

In order to share their stunning landscape and portrait photographs, users had to trim them into a square format or resort to third-party software for workarounds. Wow, that’s a lot of work!

Thankfully, Instagram heard its users and in 2015 added the ability to take both horizontal and vertical photos.

With that in mind, let’s discuss the most optimal image dimensions for Instagram posts, such as the standard square, the portrait orientation, and the landscape orientation.

Instagram Square Photo Size

Recommended Resolution: 1920 x 1080

In the case of the standard square photo upload, the aspect ratio is 1:1.

Because most photo editing software like Instagram includes an automatic cropping feature, this is the easiest photo size to get properly on the first try.

Furthermore, the iOS camera supports taking square images natively.

The optimal dimensions for a photo are between 320px and 1080px on all sides.

Instagram Portrait Size

Image Resolution: 1080px x 1350px
Want to know how to upload a full-size photo to Instagram without having to clip it?

Pictures of people and landscapes both work for this purpose. Portrait shots are similarly simple to get perfect the first time, though you may need to clip extremely tall or wide images to match Instagram’s constraints.

How big is an Instagram profile picture?

The optimum dimensions for a portrait on Instagram are 1080 pixels wide by 1350 pixels tall.

Snap photos have 4:6 or 9:16 ratios, therefore if you upload a larger portrait you will be prompted to trim it down.

Instagram Video Post Dimensions

Instagram Video Post Dimensions

Ideal Video Resolution: Square and Carousel – 1080px x 1080px Portrait – 1080px x 1350px Landscape – 1080px x 608px

If video is your favorite medium to connect with your followers, it’s important to get the right dimensions to make uploading and posting your content a breeze.

That way, you may share footage shot on the go.

In case you’re interested in learning more about the video, we’ve written a comprehensive guide on Instagram video sizes and dimensions that’s loaded with advice and resources for editing your Instagram videos.

It also includes Instagram‘s video requirements, which many users have been eager to learn.

However, don’t worry; we’ll still discuss some of those specifications below, such as aspect ratios, length, and minimum measurements.

What are the dimensions for the Instagram video?

Just like photo posts, you have the option of using square, horizontal, or landscape videos in your feed. The ideal dimensions for each are:

  • Square and Carousel – 1080px x 1080px
  • Portrait – 1080px x 1350px
  • Landscape – 1080px x 608px

Except for our suggested aspect ratio for landscape films, all are the same as photo posts.

  • 1:1 aspect ratio for square and carousel videos
  • 4:5 aspect ratio for portrait videos
  • 16:9 aspect ratio for landscape videos

To avoid having to spend too much time editing your video into the 1.9:1 aspect ratio used in photo uploads, we advise shooting landscape videos in the 16:9 format.

It’s generally not worth your time to crop and modify your video to alter it from a 16:9 ratio if Instagram users are accustomed to seeing videos in that format.

When it comes to posting videos to your Instagram account, there are a few parameters you should be aware of. The following are the maximums that can be included in your Instagram video post:

  • 30 frames per second
  • 60 seconds in length
  • File size of 4 GB

You won’t be able to submit your video if it’s too long, too high in quality, or too large in file size, so keep these specs in mind when you create your film.

Similar to Instagram photo postings, the minimum and maximum resolutions for your video will be determined by the direction in which you shot it (square, landscape, or portrait).

The minimum resolutions are:

  • Square and Carousel Instagram Video Minimum Resolution is 600 x 600
  • Portrait Instagram Video Minimum Resolution is 600 x 750
  • Landscape Instagram Video Minimum Resolution is 600 x 315

Keep in mind that your video will be compressed after uploading, so utilizing the highest possible resolution is recommended.

The maximum resolutions are:

  • Square Instagram Video Maximum Resolution is 1080 x 1080
  • Portrait Instagram Video Maximum Resolution is 1080 x 1350
  • Landscape Instagram Video Maximum Resolution is 1080 x 608
  • Carousel Instagram Video Maximum Resolution is 1080 x 1080.

Instagram Stories and Reels Dimensions

Instagram Stories and Reels Dimensions

We recommend a size of 1080 pixels wide by 1920 pixels high for your Instagram Stories.

In addition to regular Instagram posts, Instagram Lives, and media uploads, you can also use Instagram Stories to interact with your audience and build your brand.

Although you can upload landscape photographs and videos to Instagram Stories, they will not appear as well as they would in portrait mode because Stories material is optimized for viewing in that orientation.

As such, Instagram Stories’ aspect ratios differ from the other post sizes we discussed.

Instagram Stories accepts media with an aspect ratio between 1:9:1 and 9:16.

But if you want to get people’s attention (and make your postings simpler to read and understand), you should use up the whole Stories screen.

For the best results on Instagram Stories, you should use a photo size of 1080 pixels wide by 1920 pixels tall (9:16 aspect ratio).

Instagram Reels have the same resolution (1080p x 1920p) and aspect ratio (9:16) as Instagram Stories.

But there are a few things you need to be aware of!

Instagram Reels are previewed in the feed with a 4:5 portrait aspect ratio (cropped from the top and bottom and centered)

-An overlay appears in the video’s lower right corner with your Reel’s caption.

There is no maximum length for reels, however, they must be at least 30 seconds.
