Jo Koy’s Biography
Joseph Glenn Herbert, better known as Jo Koy, was born on June 2, 1971, in Tacoma, Washington. Koy’s mother, a Filipino who worked as a manager for a Filipino rock band, married his American father while he was stationed in the Philippines with the United States Air Force.
Jo’s parents split when he was 13 years old, and his single mother brought up their four remaining children. After he graduated from high school in Tacoma, Washington, his family relocated to Las Vegas. Jo’s ill grandma prompted the family’s relocation to Las Vegas.
The name Jo uses on stage is really a childhood moniker. Jo often attributes his acting and comic skills to his mom and talks about her throughout his performances. His mother urged him to perform in talent events and to do impromptu performances for their friends and family.
Jo attended freshman orientation at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Instead of continuing his education, though, he decided to pursue stand-up comedy full-time.

December 2020: Jo Koy Reaches out To Chelsea Handler
When asked about the beginning of their relationship by The Hollywood Reporter in December 2021, the pair reflected on the previous year. A few months before Christmas 2020, Koy asked Handler for her number; she told him, “Not if you’re trying to f—- me.”
In the following eight months, Handler and Koy’s friendship blossomed, and they started calling one other more often.
August 2021: Chelsea Handler Makes the First Move on Jo Koy
Koy said to The Hollywood Reporter that after a year of growing close, Handler made the first move on her in August 2021.

September 27, 2021: Chelsea Handler and Jo Koy Go Instagram Official
After years of being close friends, Handler and Koy finally made their relationship Instagram public a week after she teased him. Two images of the pair were posted by Handler on Instagram; one showed her arm slung over Koy’s shoulder, and the other showed the two of them kissing.
She captioned the photo, “He’s on tour, I’m on tour, occasionally we travel together.”
December 7, 2021: Chelsea Handler and Jo Koy Make Their Red Carpet Debut
At the 2021 People’s Choice Awards, where Handler was honored for her program Vaccinated and Horny, the pair made their red carpet debut.

April 3, 2022: Chelsea Handler and Jo Koy Attend the Grammy Awards
There was a red carpet photo op of Handler and Koy at the 2022 Grammys, where Handler was up for best comedy album. In an interview with the Recording Academy, Handler gushed about how much having Koy there for her first Grammy nomination meant to her.
When you’re with the one you love, “life is so much better, you know?” she said. “It’s just you and the one that loves you, respects you, and is always there for you. This leads me to conclude that every pot has a lid… Never, ever give in! In no way should you accept mediocrity. Your helper is on the way.”
June 2, 2022: Chelsea Handler Shares a Sweet Post for Jo Koy’s 51st Birthday
As Koy turned 51, Handler sent a touching statement to Instagram in which she detailed the qualities in a mate she wished she’d had.
“A couple of years ago, I wrote myself a letter in which I detailed my ideal relationship in detail. (Except for one),” she jokingly remarked, referring to the passage in which she expressed her desire for a life mate who has a “wonderful head of hair.” “To my boyfriend: Happy Birthday! I adore you beyond the stars and back again. You are the nicest person ever, @jokoy.”

June 2022: Chelsea Handler and Jo Koy Visit New York City
In between stops on their separate comedy tours, Handler and Koy managed to squeeze in a trip to the Big Apple. In a series of Instagram posts, she showed off the couple cuddling up at Grand Banks, an oyster bar located on a historic wooden ship in Manhattan’s Pier 25.
She commented, in part, that people were missing out if they had never enjoyed an “unch” aboard a moored boat in Manhattan. We made friends, our server Jabria shucked oysters, and @jokoy did stand up while sitting at the bar and amusing everyone.
Koy responded to Handler’s tweet with the words “Just another great day in NYC.”
July 18, 2022: Chelsea Handler and Jo Koy Announce Their Breakup
Handler and Koy dated for over a year before the latter delivered the news to her followers on Instagram that they had split up. The comedian shared an adorable video the couple shot in advance of their anniversary. They shared the wisdom they’d gained from one another in this book.
In the post, Handler expressed gratitude to their supporters and pleaded with them to “continue to cheer for both of us.”
“It is with a heavy heart to say that we have decided mutually that it is best for us to take a break from our relationship right now,” she wrote. “Knowing that many of you cared about us as a couple, I wanted to tell you how much it meant to us that you were interested in us.

Friends of the couple, according to a source who spoke to PEOPLE, hope that this isn’t a permanent split.
Friends and family of both parties “are still holding out hope that they can work things out,” the person added. But it’s obvious that they’ve both improved as people as a result of being in this relationship.
