A New York native, Don McLean was born to Elizabeth and Donald McLean in New Rochelle, New York in 1945. On his father’s side, he is descended from Scots, and on his mother’s, from Italians. Folk music piqued McLean’s interest as an adolescent. Even though he missed a lot of school because of his asthma as a kid, his love of music never faded.
Erik Darling and Fred Hellerman, the Weavers’ Erik Darling and Fred Hellerman, introduced him to the music profession when he was just 16 years old. McLean entered Villanova University in 1963 after graduating from Iona Preparatory School but dropped out after only four months. After working with Harold Leventhal and Herb Gart, he formed a partnership that lasted for 18 years. Over the next six years, McLean performed at a wide range of locations and events all over the United States.
In 1968, McLean received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Iona College. A scholarship to Columbia University’s Graduate School of Music he later declined in order to focus on his artistic endeavors. The communities along the Hudson River he visited while on a state grant allowed him to expand his audience. Pete Seeger became a mentor and friend to McLean during this period, and he accompanied Seeger on his Clearwater boat voyage to raise awareness of river pollution. “Shenandoah,” a traditional folk song, was sung by both of them on the Clearwater album in 1974.
