For the albums “How Long Has This Been Going On” (1995) and “Tell Me Something: The Songs of Mose Allison” (1996), as well as 18 singles, including a cover of “Gloria” with John Lee Hooker, he collaborated with English jazz and R&B performer Georgie Fame. Van’s first album on his own label, titled “Down the Road,” debuted in the top ten of the charts in the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Ireland, Norway, New Zealand, and Sweden in 2000. Personal Life

Janet Rigsbee, Van’s girlfriend in 1968, consented to get married to him so he wouldn’t be deported. Van became the stepfather to Peter, Janet’s son from a previous relationship, and on April 7, 1970, the couple relocated from New York to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where they had already welcomed their daughter Shana (who went on to become a singer-songwriter). Morrison and Rigsbee’s relationship ended in 1973, and upon Van’s return to the United Kingdom, he quickly began dating and eventually married socialite Michelle Rocca in 2006.

The couple, who had two children together (a girl, Abbe, born in January 2006, and a son, Fionn, born in August 2007), split up in 2018. Morrison’s tour manager, Gigi Lee, claimed to have given birth to Van’s child in 2009. Sadly, George Ivan Morrison III lost suddenly at the young age of 13 in 2011. Gigi Lee herself died of throat cancer later that same year. Van has consistently refuted claims that he is in fact George’s biological father.

Morrison has been outspoken about his opposition to social isolation during the Covid-19 pandemic, releasing three songs in September 2020 to rail against UK lockdowns. Consequently, Van has been labeled a “covidiot,” and others have demanded that the Belfast City Council take away the honor of giving him the Freedom of the City. A “Northern Ireland’s health minister, Robin Swann, said of Morrison in a “Rolling Stone” story,

“His statements will provide great comfort to the conspiracy theorists — the tin foil hat brigade who campaign against masks and vaccines and think this is all a massive worldwide effort to eliminate freedoms. That he has targeted efforts to safeguard the elderly and helpless in our society is a clear indication of his priorities. It’s all very strange and careless.” Morrison established the Lockdown Financial Hardship Fund in November 2020 to assist suffering musicians during the epidemic; earnings from the single “Stand and Deliver,” which Van recorded with Eric Clapton, went to the fund.
