At the 2014 National Junior (Under-20) Championships, McLaughlin finished a close second to Shamier Little in the 400-meter hurdles. Her time of 55.63 was a U.S. high school freshman record and a world age-14 best.

She was one year too young to be eligible to compete for the United States at the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships. Additionally, that summer, McLaughlin set a global age group record (13.34) in the 100-meter hurdles over the 76.2 cm (2 ft 6 in) hurdles.

At the 2015 national youth trials, McLaughlin lowered her 400-meter hurdles best to 55.28; the time was a world record for a 15-year-old and stood second on the all-time world youth list after Leslie Maxie’s world youth best (and U.S. high school record) of 55.20 achieved in 1984. She earned a spot at the Cali, Colombia, IAAF World Youth Championships in 2015, where she won gold in 55.94 and concluded the year as the world’s top junior and youth competitor in the competition.

At the 2016 New Balance national outdoor high school championships, McLaughlin won the 400-meter hurdles in 54.46, shattering Lashinda Demus’s 54.70 American junior records, Maxie’s prep record, and the world youth best.

Additionally, she participated in the Swedish medley relay for Union Catholic, running a quick 400-meter split of 50.93 as the team set a new high school record of 2:07.99. The following week, McLaughlin finished first in the USATF junior championship in 54.54; as a result of her achievements, she was named the Gatorade National Girls Athlete of the Year.

McLaughlin was a member of an American Record four that, on January 28, 2017, at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, set a new world record for the indoor distance medley relay with a time of 10:40.31. Olympic medalist Emma Coburn ran the first leg in 3:18.40, followed by McLaughlin in 52.32, Brenda Martinez in 2:01.92 for the second leg in the 800, and Jenny Simpson in 4:27.66 for the third leg in 1600. At the New Balance Nationals in New York City on March 12, 2017, McLaughlin dropped her own national 400-meter record to 51.61 later that indoor season.

At the 2016 US Olympic Trials, McLaughlin won both her heat (55.46) and semi-final (55.23) in the 400-meter hurdles. She finished third in the final in 54.15, breaking both the world’s junior and youth records. As a result, she qualified for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro before entering her senior year of high school.

Since Carol Lewis and Denean Howard qualified for the 1980 Moscow Olympics, which were boycotted, McLaughlin is the youngest athlete to be selected for the American Olympic track and field team.

She finished fifth in her semi-final heat in the Olympics, failing to advance to the finals.

At the Arcadia Invitational in April 2017, McLaughlin broke the 300-meter hurdles national high school record by finishing in 38.90 seconds. Lashinda Demus set the previous mark in 2001 with a time of 39.98. Given that the 300m hurdles are not contested in New Jersey high school track events, McLaughlin’s attempt at the record was his first ever effort over the distance. Her time of 38.90 is regarded as a North American record and ranks second all-time globally after Zuzana Hejnova’s 38.16 mark from 2013.

Later that month, in the Championship of America high school girls 4400 at the 123rd Penn Relays, McLaughlin ran the fastest high school girls relay split in history (400 meters). In an eight-team field, McLaughlin took the baton at the back and recorded a split of 50.37.

Her Union Catholic relay team finished in third place with a time of 3:38.92 after passing five other teams.

On June 18, 2017, she improved upon this score at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor Meet. She passed five runners after receiving the baton in the sixth position during the final handoff to lead Union Catholic to victory, recording a split of 49.85 seconds.
