However, she was unable to settle into a single radio station, so she worked as a DJ, a reporter, and the host of a celebrity interview show at a variety of different outlets. Raphael lost 18 of her 24 jobs in the radio industry. In 1981, she hit it big when she was hired on permanently to anchor a call-in advice show on the New York City radio station WMCA.

Raphael married her first husband, Andrew Vladimir, in 1953; they had two children together, Allison and Andrea, before divorcing in 1958. In 1992, at the age of 33, Allison tragically lost her life due to a drug overdose.

In 1962, Raphael wed Karl Soderlund, her second husband. They raised a son named Jason together, and remained a couple until Soderlund’s death in 2020.
