American football head coach and ex-player Matt Rhule currently serves as the mentor of the Carolina Panthers. He has previously served as head coach at both Baylor and Temple.

Early Life

The 47-year-old Matthew Kenneth Rhule was born on January 31, 1975, in New York City. He was born to Dennis and Gloria Rhule and is their son. He spent his childhood in New York City before relocating to State College, Pennsylvania with his family when he was a teenager. Prior to enrolling at Penn State, Rhule played linebacker for State College Area High School.

Rhule was a three-time Penn State Scholar-Athlete and a 1997 Academic All-Big Ten selection during his four years as a Nittany Lion football player under Joe Paterno. Rhule received his BA in political science from Penn State. He attended the University at Buffalo and graduated with a master’s degree in educational psychology in 2003.

Coaching career

After Matt Rhule’s playing days were done, the college hired him to coach its linebackers. Rhule spent one year at Albright before moving on to Buffalo, UCLA, and Western Carolina before landing his current role as defensive line coach at Temple in 2006. In 2007, Rhule became Temple’s quarterback coach, and in 2008, he was promoted to offensive coordinator.

On December 17, 2012, Rhule replaced Steve Addazio as Temple’s head football coach. Addazio had left to become the head coach at Boston College.

When Rhule signed his four-year agreement with Temple in July 2015, it took him through the 2021 season. Rhule’s contract was renegotiated to retain him at the institution after he had another fantastic year in his third with the Owls. Despite interest from Mizzou and Syracuse, he decided to stay at Temple.

With the help of his alma university, Rhule led his Owls to a 27-10 victory over Penn State on September 5, 2015, in front of 69,741 fans. It was the first victory for the Owls over the Nittany Lions since 1941.

During Rhule’s third year at the helm of the Owls’ football program, the team went 10-2 during the regular season, won the American Athletic Conference’s East Division, and reached the conference’s title game. The next year, with his leadership, the Owls advanced to their second straight championship game and ultimately won their conference for the first time since 1967.

Carolina Panthers

On January 7, 2020, the Carolina Panthers hired Matt Rhule as their fifth head coach. After allowing the second-most points in the league in 2018, the Panther’s defense improved greatly under Rhule’s direction, moving all the way up to the fifteenth spot in 2019. “Hasn’t gotten off to a flawless start in Carolina, but the Panthers appear to be going in the right direction,” Bleacher Report said of Rhule’s first season.

Rhule’s first game as an NFL head coach ended in a loss against the Las Vegas Raiders by a score of 30-34 on September 13, 2020. By a score of 21-16 over the Los Angeles Chargers on September 27, 2020, Rhule earned his first victory as an NFL head coach. Panther’s first season under Rhule ended with a 5-11 record and a third-place finish in the NFC South.

Longtime girlfriend Julie Rhule and her husband Matt are now husband and wife. Bryant Rhule and Vivienne Rhule are two of the couple’s three children that have achieved prominence.
