On January 26, 1991, in Laie, Hawaii, Manti Malietau Louis Te’o entered the world. At a private school in Hawaii, he played high school football and eventually became a star athlete. Awards included the 2007 State Defensive Player of the Year and the 2007 Gatorade State Player of the Year. Manti had a breakout junior season as a running back, finishing with 90 tackles, 5 sacks, 400 yards, and 10 touchdowns. Recruiters and universities all throughout the country took notice.
Before his senior year began, Te’o had already been approached by several institutions who were interested in him. In that season, he helped lead his high school to its first-ever state victory while also contributing 129 tackles, 11 sacks, and 4 touchdowns. One of his most memorable plays was a touchdown he scored by returning a blocked punt. Manti’s accomplishments earned him multiple awards, including Gatorade State Player of the Year for the second time.
After finishing high school, he enrolled in Notre Dame in 2009. The following season, as a freshman, he started all 12 games he played in and made 63 tackles. Because of his outstanding performance thus far, he was named to the Freshman All-American team. He moved inside from outside linebacker his sophomore year. He finished the season with 133 tackles. It was also an all-time high for his professional career. The following year he improved to 128 tackles and even more awards. He finished his college career with 103 tackles, helping Notre Dame to the No. 2 scoring defence ranking in the country.

His team, the San Diego Chargers, picked him up in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, with the 38th overall pick. When it came time for Te’o to enter the NFL Draft, many scouts were underwhelmed by his performance, particularly in the 40-yard dash. Manti’s foot injury in the season opener forced him to sit out a significant portion of the preseason. Finally making his debut that season, he did so against the Houston Texans. He ended up making 61 tackles overall.
His career was severely derailed in 2014 when he shattered his foot. By the season’s midpoint, he had recovered enough to start piling up interceptions and sacks. He averaged roughly 60 tackles per season over the next few years and was eventually elected a team captain for the Chargers in 2016. A tear in his Achilles tendon was the second ailment he endured that year.
Manti was traded to the New Orleans Saints after being placed on injured reserve. He committed to the new club for two years and in 2017 was the team leader in tackles for loss. When his contract expired, unfortunately, he was not re-signed. While he did not play much for New Orleans in 2018, the team re-signed him on a short contract for 2019.
He was added to the Chicago Bears’ practise squad in 2020. He was added to the active roster in 2021 and made his debut that season, a game against the New Orleans Saints. Nonetheless, after the game was over, he was sent back to the practise squad. His NFL career came to an end after the Bears’ practise squad contract expired in January 2021.

Te’o was arguably the most decorated defensive player in college football history when he graduated from Notre Dame. The Maxwell Award, Chuck Bednarik Award, the Butkus Award, the Lombardi Award, and the Walter Camp Award were just a few of the honours he received. When he was on Notre Dame’s team, he made 437 tackles in total.

Te’o’s claim that he had a sweetheart at Notre Dame who died of leukaemia was a key factor in his rise to fame. Everyone (even his own parents) was surprised to learn that he had never met this woman in person and that their entire relationship had taken place online. Manti claims that this woman’s name was Lennay Kekua, and that she received a diagnosis of leukaemia following medical attention for an auto accident.
At first, this topic held the media’s attention, and numerous pieces were written about the unhappy couple. When journalists began looking into Lennay Kekua, however, they immediately learned that he did not exist. As details emerged, it became apparent that a male had impersonated a lady on the internet in an attempt to start a romantic relationship with Te’o.
The media quickly shifted focus, forcing Manti to deliver a statement in which he claimed he had no idea the woman was a fake and that he had been the victim of a scam. Eventually, he acknowledged to his father that he had lied to him about meeting the woman in person. Somehow, the man mimicking this made-up woman managed to sound like a female when leaving voicemails for Manti.
Manti popped the question to his (actual) girlfriend Jovi Nicole Engbino in 2020. Late that year, they tied the knot.
