Career
Jennings attempted to restart his musical career after being released from prison by turning to music once more. In December 2002, he recorded a demo CD with four tracks just two days after his release. Even more remarkable is the fact that Jennings was playing music at the legendary Apollo theatre in New York City less than a month after his release from prison as part of their Showtime In Harlem event.
The Apollo audience originally booed him when he entered the stage for his first appearance, but they were won over by his performance. The fact that Jennings is not your standard R&B singer and plays the piano, guitar, bass, and all three in addition to singing undoubtedly helps.
In reality, Jennings actually sold about 1,000 copies of his four-song demo during his brief “residency” at the Apollo. Major record labels started showing interest in the same demo. Encouraged by his rising fame, Jennings took the plunge and relocated to New York City in order to further his musical career.
He was able to secure a recording deal with Sony Urban Music, and his debut studio album, “Lyfe 268-192,” was released in 2004. The number is the one he received while he was incarcerated. The album’s track “Must Be Nice,” in particular, did well and was even nominated for a Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Award that year.
