Dozier was a member of the songwriting and producing trio Holland–Dozier–Holland, which was largely responsible for the distinctive sound of Motown and the widespread commercial success of its musicians, including Martha and the Vandellas, the Supremes, the Four Tops, and the Isley Brothers. Dozier was the group’s primary musical arranger and producer alongside Brian Holland, while Eddie Holland focused on writing and producing the lyrics and vocals.

After his time at Motown Records, Dozier founded and owned record labels Invictus and Hot Wax with the Holland Brothers, where he oversaw the production of hits by artists like Freda Payne, Honey Cone, and the Chairmen of the Board, and 100 Proof Aged in Soul.
