His father told him that the fastest route to becoming a major leaguer was as a catcher. As a 17-year-old, Bench was selected 36th overall by the Cincinnati Reds in the second round of the 1965 amateur draught, playing for the minor-league Buffalo Bisons in the 1966 and 1967 seasons.

During the 1967 season, he hit a grand slam against Jim Palmer, who would go on to never allow a grand slam in 19 years in the major leagues. The bench was called up to the Reds in August 1967. He hit only .163, but impressed many people with his defense and strong throwing arm, among them Hall of Famer Ted Williams.

Williams signed a baseball for him and predicted that the young catcher would be a “Hall of Famer for sure!” 22 years later, in 1989, Williams’ prediction came true when Bench was inducted into Cooperstown.

The bench is a seasoned marital veteran, having tied the knot four times. When he married Vickie Chesser, a toothpaste model who had dated Joe Namath, he lost the title of “baseball’s most eligible bachelor,” which had been given to him before the 1975 season. Bench proposed to his future wife just four days after they first met, and the couple tied the knot on February 21, 1975. Bench advised that his wife take $25,000 from Hustler magazine to pose nude, and the couple quickly found they were not compatible.

According to reports, Bench told her after the season ended, “Now I’m done with two things I hate: baseball and you.” This led to their breakup and subsequent divorce 13 months later. Yes, I did my best. In a December 1975 interview with Phil Donahue, Chesser said, “I even hand-squeezed orange juice.” Both of us probably went into the marriage with a naivete about what it entailed. Chesser returned to Manhattan and declared, “Johnny Bench is a fantastic athlete, a mediocre everything else, and a terrible tragedy as a person.”
