Music Career:

After leaving school, Joe Walsh attracted a national audience when he became the lead guitarist of the James Gang. The James Gang supported The Who across Europe, and their song “Funk #49” demonstrated his vocal and instrumental prowess. After Walsh and his college mate Joe Vitale and bassist Kenny Passarelli split from James Gang in 1972, they founded Barnstorm. There was a three-year period during which the band was active, during which time three albums were recorded. Many Eagles members contributed to their final album, 1974’s “So What,” which was filled with cameos. Walsh joined the Eagles at the suggestion of his own producer, Bill Szymczyk, who also produced the band.

In 1975, Walsh joined the Eagles as the band’s guitarist and keyboard, replacing their founding member Bernie Leadon. Walsh joined the Eagles just in time for the release of “Hotel California,” the band’s first record. After the group’s greatest hits album, which sold 42 million copies, “Hotel California” became the group’s second highest-selling album of all time with 32 million copies sold. Its hit singles included “Hotel California” and “Life in the Fast Lane.”

Walsh’s riff served as the foundation for the hard rock hit “Life in the Fast Lane,” which peaked at number eleven on the charts.

When the Eagles issued their first greatest hits album, “Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975),” it quickly became the best-selling record of the whole 20th century in the United States. Although “The Long Run,” released in 1979, took two years to record and was panned by some critics as a lackluster follow-up to “Hotel California,” it was a commercial success for the band nonetheless. The album topped the charts and sold 7 million copies. Three top 10 singles by Walsh received extensive airplay: “Heartache Tonight,” The Long Run,” and “I Can’t Tell You Why.” Walsh went his own way when the Eagles disbanded in 1980 and embarked on a fourteen-year break.

As a member of the Eagles, Walsh began his solo career with the albums “So What,” “You Can’t Argue with a Sick Mind,” and “But Seriously, Folks…” from 1978. He continued to release solo albums throughout the 1980s after the Eagles broke up, but they were never as successful as the band’s recordings. In 1981, he released “There Goes the Neighborhood,” which reached No. 20 on the charts. Only one single was released from the album, but “A Life of Illusion” became a huge hit and is now one of Walsh’s most recognized songs.

Walsh’s “You Bought it — You Name It,” which was released in May 1983, received mostly unfavorable reviews from critics. Later in the 1980s, he put out two additional albums that bombed in the record stores. After “Ordinary Average Guy” in 1991, “Songs for a Dying Planet” in 1992, “Analog Man” in 2012, and “All Night Long: Live in Dallas” in 2013, Walsh continued to put out music.

Walsh has worked with many famous musicians throughout the years. Some of these artists include BB King, Dan Fogelberg, Randy Newman, Bob Seegar, Ringo Starr, Sheryl Crow, and Warren Zevon. He rejoined the Eagles and went on tour with them again in 2001.
