You probably know him as a sports analyst for Fox NFL Sunday even if you don’t know him as a coach. As an added bonus, he will be officially inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020.

Turning the Thing Around: My Life in Football is a memoir he penned in which he reflects on his football career.

Early Life

James William Johnson entered the world on July 16, 1943, in Port Arthur, Texas. He first started to really enjoy football during his junior year of high school. While in high school, he crossed paths with a few future celebrities including Janis Joplin and G.W. Bailey.

After finishing high school, Johnson enrolled in the University of Arkansas, where he was quickly recruited to play football. During the subsequent time frame, the Razorbacks achieved unprecedented heights of success, and Jimmy was named to the all-Southwest Conference defensive line.

Other noteworthy players, such as Jerry Jones (future owner of the Dallas Cowboys), Ken Hatfield, Loyd Phillips, and many others, also joined the Razorbacks. The Razorbacks were also led by Frank Boyles, who is largely regarded as one of the best college football coaches of all time.

Johnson definitely benefited from his time spent on the field with Broyles, and he must have learned a great deal of tactical wisdom in that time.

Arkansas Razorbacks football team won the 1964 national championship after going unbeaten that season. Jimmy’s knack for getting right back up after being tackled earned him the moniker “Jimmy Jumpup,” yet he never stopped being an important team member.

The legendary American football coach Jimmy Johnson is worth an estimated $45 million. Jimmy took his coaching skills from Oklahoma State to the University of Miami before making the jump to the National Football League as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

During his time there, the team achieved unprecedented success, including back-to-back Super Bowl victories thanks to Johnson’s leadership. After retiring from the Miami Dolphins, Jimmy began a career as a sportscaster and analyst.

Real Estate

Jimmy Johnson has, for a long time, kept a sizable property in Islamorada, in the Florida Keys. Unfortunately, he discovered that life in this area wasn’t without its challenges when Hurricane Irma reportedly caused extensive damage to his property in 2017. Upon his return to his house after the hurricane, Johnson found a number of discouraging problems.

As a result of the high winds and water damage, his dock was leaning dangerously. Jimmy claimed that the sand had totally engulfed his home to the point where he had to use a shovel to get into his home.

Even the saltwater pond owned by the legendary coach was wiped out. It’s hard to fathom how much of a financial loss this catastrophe must have represented for Johnson, who spent the previous twenty years transforming this house into his dream residence.

However, unlike many other residents of the Florida Keys, the main house and guest house on his property survived relatively unscathed. Johnson was reduced to tears by Hurricane Irma’s destruction, but he has determined to spend millions of dollars rebuilding his property.

Coaching Career

In 1965, Johnson began his coaching career as an assistant with the Louisiana Tech University Bulldogs. Following many positions as an assistant coach, he was hired as the defensive line coach at Oklahoma State University.

In 1973, he took a job as defensive coordinator for his alma mater’s football team. He served as Pitt’s defensive coordinator and associate head coach in 1977 and 1978.

When Jimmy initially entered the coaching profession, he was hired as the head coach at Oklahoma State. He then went on to become head coach of the Miami Dolphins, where his squad promptly defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks by a score of 51-7.

Since Johnson felt wronged when the University of Arkansas conducted an interview with him before informing him that another head coach had already been hired, many saw this as an opportunity for retribution on the part of the university.

In 1989, Johnson began his career in the National Football League (NFL) with the Dallas Cowboys. He took over as head coach and led the team to two consecutive Super Bowl victories (in 1992 and 1993). Johnson and owner Jerry Jones had disagreements, and in 1994, Jimmy agreed to leave for $2 million. Johnson was hired as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 1996, but he never lived up to the hype. In 1999, he decided to call it quits.

Entertainment Career

Johnson was able to make a smooth transition from coaching to the entertainment industry. He’s done a lot of work as a Fox Sports analyst, and he’ll be a regular contributor to “Fox NFL Sunday” starting in 2020. Covering college football’s biggest games, including the Bowl Championship Series, is another natural fit for Jimmy. Moreover, Johnson contributes to Foxsports.com as a writer.

Johnson’s acting career has also taken off, with guest spots on popular shows like “The Shield” and “Coach” under his belt. As an added bonus, he has a cameo in the upcoming Adam Sandler movie, “The Waterboy.”

Johnson is most well-known for his appearance on the season of “Survivor” which was filmed in Nicaragua in 2010. Jimmy said he had a good time but also called it a “stressful” event, and his health was in jeopardy the whole time.

Over the years, Jimmy Johnson has appeared in TV ads for a wide range of products. Among these are well-known names like Procter & Gamble and ExtenZe, as well as the now-debunked business, Leading Edge.
