Sarah Jean Perkins gave birth to Carn in Columbus, Georgia. She joined the church choir when she was four years old.
When she met and married jazz pianist Doug Carn (the couple later separated), Carn had intended to continue her studies at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. She also joined his jazz fusion band as a featured vocalist. Carn and her husband worked on four early albums together when they were based in Los Angeles, California: Infant Eyes, Spirit of the New Land, Revelation, and Adam’s Apple on Black Jazz/Ovation.

Philadelphia International Records, run by Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, signed Carn in 1976. In 1976, she launched her self-titled debut album. “Free Love,” the lead single, debuted at number 23 R&B. Happy to Be With You, her second album for the company, was released in June 1978. Don’t Let It Go to Your Head, a popular song was among its components.

When I Find You Love, Carn’s third Philadelphia International album was released in 1979.

On the R&B chart, “My Don’t Come Easy” peaked at number 43. Was that all it was, a song by Jerry Butler, was on the album. This was a huge disco smash in UK clubs despite not charting.
