Early Years:

On March 26, 1944, Diana Ross, the second-eldest child of Ernestine and Fred Ross, Sr., was born in Detroit, Michigan. She graduated in January 1962 from Cass Technical High School in downtown Detroit. Her original ambition was to be a fashion designer, so she enrolled in classes in clothing design, millinery, pattern making, and tailoring.

Ross joined the Primettes, the female vocal group of the Primes when she was fifteen years old. The Primettes were invited to audition for Motown Records after winning a talent competition in Windsor, Ontario.

Ross approached former neighbor William “Smokey” Robinson, who agreed to bring the Primettes to Motown in exchange for him and his band, the Miracles, hiring their guitarist Marv Tarplin. The Primettes impressed Motown executives, but they thought they were too young. Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown, then told them to return after they graduated from high school.

The Primettes remained undeterred, and they frequently appeared at Motown’s Hitsville headquarters to lend a hand on recordings, performing everything from hand claps to background vocals. Gordy eventually signed the band in January 1961, but only on the condition that they change their name. Barbara Martin quit the group a year later, leaving Ross, Florence Ballard, and Mary Wilson as the remaining members of the Supremes.
