Stabenow campaigned for public office for the first time in 1974 while a graduate student at Michigan State University, motivated by the danger of the closing of a local nursing home. She was elected to the Ingham County Board of Commissioners for the first time in November 1974, becoming only the third woman to do so. She served on the board from 1975 to 1978. Wolpe chose Stabenow as his running mate after the primary, and she was the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor on the general election ballot. Engler won 61 percent to 38 percent against the Wolpe–Stabenow ticket.
