While in college, Barker worked at Springfield’s KTTS-FM radio station. He then moved to Palm Beach, Florida, where he worked as a news editor and announcer at WWPG 1340 AM in Lantana, which is now known as WPBR.

He moved to California in 1950 and was given his own radio show, “The Bob Barker Show,” which aired in Burbank for six years. While presenting an audience participation event in California, game show producer Ralph Edwards noticed him. In 1956, Barker made the switch from radio to television, anchoring “Truth or Consequences.” Until 1974, he was a regular on the show.

In 1971, while still presenting “Truth or Consequences,” he was chosen to host an NBC pilot called “Simon Says.” Then, in early 1972, CBS became intrigued by Mark Goodson and Bill Todman’s suggestion to bring “The Price Is Right” back to life. If Barker was picked as the host, the network agreed to telecast it.

As a result, on September 4, 1972, Barker began presenting a more contemporary version of “The Price Is Right” on CBS. He held this position until October 31, 2006, when he publicly stepped down as host and announced his retirement from the show.

He taped his final show on June 6, 2007, and it aired on June 15. Barker returned three times after leaving the show: once in April 2009 to promote his new autobiography, once in December 2013, to commemorate his 90th birthday, and once in April 2015 for an April Fools’ Day joke in which he momentarily replaced  Drew Carey, who was the current host at the time.
