Career:
In 1987, he and boyhood friend Mike Dirnt formed the band “Sweet Children.” While Sean Hughes was playing bass and John Kiffmeyer was playing drums, they were both playing guitars. After Hughes left the band, Dirnt stepped in and took over the bass position.. In 1989, the band changed its name to “Green Day” because of its members’ marijuana use.
In the same year, the band released their first EP, 1,000 Hours. 39/Smooth, their debut studio album, and Slappy, an extended play, were recorded the next year. The compilation titled 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours includes both albums.
Tre Cool made his debut as Green Day’s new drummer, replacing Sobrante, on the band’s second album, Kerplunk. Dookie, the band’s second album, was released in 1994 and sold more over 60 million albums worldwide, putting them in the mainstream.
