Career

In 1964, Shaw started working for WNUS in Chicago as a news anchor and reporter. The Westinghouse Broadcasting Company hired him as a reporter in Chicago; he later became the network’s White House correspondent in Washington. From 1971 until 1977, he was a correspondent for CBS News based in the Washington, DC, area. Back in 1977, he made the switch to ABC News, first as the Latin American bureau head and then as the Capitol Hill senior correspondent.

In 1980, Shaw left ABC to join CNN as a co-anchor on the network’s PrimeNews program, reporting from the nation’s capital.

Shaw’s coverage of the 1981 assassination attempt on U.S. President Ronald Reagan is credited with helping to establish CNN as a credible and reliable broadcast news source at an early point in the network’s history. Shaw was joined by former CBS News correspondent Daniel Schorr, one of the first on-air personalities hired by the fledgling cable channel.

Shaw gained notoriety for the question he asked Democratic U.S. presidential candidate Michael Dukakis at the second Presidential debate between Dukakis and Republican incumbent George H. W. Bush in 1988. Shaw knew that Dukakis was against capital punishment, so he questioned if he would support the death sentence in the hypothetical case of a man who raped and killed Dukakis’s wife.

Dukakis said he wouldn’t, but his detractors said he didn’t become personal enough in his response and was too reasonable. Kitty Dukakis was not the only prominent figure who find the question asked at the presidential debate to be unnecessary and provocative. Ann Compton, Andrea Mitchell, and Margaret Garrard Warner, three other journalists on the panel with Shaw, all voiced a desire to exclude Dukakis from the discussion.
