Amateur career
Little league baseball was a big part of Varvaro’s life growing up in the West Brighton section of Staten Island (a borough of New York City). He participated on the baseball team at Curtis High School on Staten Island, New York, where he graduated in June 2002.
Varvaro went to college at St. John’s, where he played baseball for the Red Storm. For the 2004 season, his junior year, he was 9-3 with a 2.32 ERA, 115 strikeouts, and 85 innings pitched. After the season, he joined the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League to continue his collegiate baseball career in the summer.

Professional baseball career
Seattle Mariners
In the twelfth round of the 2005 Major League Baseball draught, Seattle’s front office picked out Varvaro. In his first professional season, he played in five games with the Peoria Mariners. Varvaro made 22 appearances (21 starts) in 2007 with the Single-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. With 112 K’s, he was Timber Rattlers’ leader.
In 2008, Varvaro played with the Class-A High Desert Mavericks, making 30 appearances (24 starts) for the team.[8] The following year, he divided time between the Mavericks and the Double-A West Tenn Diamond Jaxx. He was selected for the All-Star team in the Southern League. He was added to the Mariners’ 40-man roster on November 20 after his time with the Arizona Fall League’s Peoria Javelinas.
When the 2010 season began, Varvaro was playing for the Diamond Jaxx in the Class A Southern League. After participating in the Southern League all-star game, the Mariners promoted him to the Tacoma Rainiers of the Class AAA Pacific Coast League on September 22, 2010. Atlanta Braves
The Atlanta Braves claimed Varvaro off waivers on January 13, 2011.[14] He began the 2011 season with the Triple-A International League’s Gwinnett Braves, and he made a brief stint in the major leagues out of the bullpen before being sent back to Gwinnett. Varvaro was recalled on September 1, 2011, and he went on to have a 2.74 ERA in 123 appearances in 2013 and 2014 while pitching in roles ranging from long relief to that of a right-handed specialist. He was DFA’d on December 15, 2014. He had a 2.99 ERA in four seasons with Atlanta.
Police Officer

After a successful baseball career, Varvaro decided to leave the game in June 2016 to complete police training with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. In December of 2016, he began working for the Port Authority Police Department. His duty took him to the World Trade Center Command. Five years later, he was promoted to teach at the Port Authority Police Academy.

Personal Life
In 2011, Varvaro wed Kerry Thomson. This couple raised a brood of four kids. For his achievements in sports, he was inducted into the 2019 class of the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame.
Sadly, on September 11th, 2022, early in the morning, Varvaro was killed in a head-on accident with a wrong-way vehicle in Jersey City, New Jersey, not far from the Holland Tunnel. When the tragedy occurred, he was on his way to the World Trade Center Command to commemorate the September 11 attacks.
