When Is National Girlfriend Day? Everything you need to know!

The time has come for the ladies to have an honest conversation. Now in its 31st year, National Girlfriend Day occurs annually on August 1. In contrast to National Boyfriend Day (which, let’s be honest, should be celebrated every day), International Women’s Day is all about women supporting women.

Consorts come and go throughout a person’s life. Employment opportunities come and go. Your girlfriends will always be there for you in a jam. Celebrate your “for better or worse” group of gal pals! This begs the question, why do we value our female relationships so highly?

Because they share a sibling bond without the burdens of maturity. Furthermore, your girlfriends will always be there to listen to your woes and offer comfort and encouragement when you need it most.

Involving your buddies in relaxing activities like spa days, weekend getaways, and PJ parties with wine and nachos is always a good time. On National Girlfriend Day 2021, you and your chums should indulge in some juicy backbiting about exes both past and present. In this sacred area, the circle of sisters, you can talk about anything you want.

History of National Girlfriend Day

when is national girlfriend day

Nobody knows for sure who came up with August 1 as National Girlfriend Day, but Mistress Susan, the proprietor of a high-end website, has the most credible claim. She claims that she established this day in 2004 as a way for female friends to show appreciation for one another.

Of course, female friendships have been around for far longer than now. Girls have been friends for so long that identifying the first known pair is impossible; instead, we’ll highlight a few famous modern-day BFFs.

In the 1860s, a group of female friends called themselves “the Edinburgh Seven,” and they worked together to become the first women admitted to a British medical school. They attended Edinburgh University to study medicine but were ultimately prevented from earning their degrees and practicing medicine.

Their doggedness helped put the issue of women’s rights on the national agenda, which in turn helped pass legislation in 1876 that finally made it legal for women to attend medical school. The Edinburgh Seven blazed a trail for subsequent generations of women in the medical profession.

During this time, revolutionary friends Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were coming together. It was these two who paved the way for white women to gain the right to vote in the United States and who is considered the “founding mothers” of the women’s rights movement. The two women first met in 1851, and it wasn’t until 1869 that they established the National Woman Suffrage Association.

On a more upbeat note, we’d like to give props to The Rockford Peaches for becoming the first professional baseball team for women in the 1940s All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. As a result of their efforts, women’s sports in the United States advanced tremendously.

The story of Ella Fitzgerald and Marilyn Monroe’s friendship is one of our favorites because Monroe is often credited with helping Fitzgerald get her big break. In 1955, the singer attempted to schedule a job at the Mocambo in Hollywood, but was rejected by the manager for lacking sufficient “sex appeal.”

Monroe phoned the management and promised to be in the front row every night if Fitzgerald was hired, bringing in the press and throngs the manager had been hoping for. Subsequently, Fitzgerald would say. “After that, I never had to play a little jazz club again.”

In more recent times, tennis greats Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert demonstrated that even intense competitors can become closest friends. During the 1970s and 1980s, the two met in an astonishing 61 tennis event finals, but they remained great friends off the court, often traveling to tournaments together and hanging out in between matches.

Close female friends are steadfast in their support for one another and have a track record of going against the grain to accomplish their goals. It’s important to take time on National Girlfriend Day 2021 to express gratitude to the women in your life who serve as your girlfriends.

While we believe every day should be your girlfriend’s day, Girlfriend’s Day is a great opportunity to show your appreciation for the amazing woman in your life. Some suggestions for commemorating the occasion following:

  • Do something special for your partner to show them how much you care and love them. Maybe surprise your partner with a gift and dinner? Or take them out to see their favorite band perform or arrange for a romantic lunch picnic in the park.
  • Don’t have a partner? Why not celebrate your girlfriends with a girl’s night out or a girls-only party?
  • Watch Girlfriends, an American sitcom that follows the lives of four friends.
