Moving Cameo in Season Finale of “The Last of US”
For the past few months, fans have been glued to HBO’s The Last of Us on Sunday nights as they follow Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) on their perilous trek across a post-apocalyptic terrain, which includes more than a few devastating detours. There was no exception made for the season finale.
In “Look for the Light,” the season’s ninth and final episode, we are introduced to Anna, Ellie’s mother, who passed very shortly after giving birth to her. Plus, in a twist that will please fans of the video game from which the program is adapted, Ashley Johnson, who voiced Ellie in the game, also plays Anna on TV.
Anna, a Close friend who left Ellie a note and her beloved switchblade, is a mysterious character who never really appears in the games and about whom very little is known. In a recent interview, Neil Druckmann, the game’s creator, discussed how he and showrunner Craig Mazin deviated from the game’s narrative — not for the first time this season — to convey a little different version of that story.
“There are other stories that have been written since the game had come out for different projects that, for one reason or another, didn’t happen, and when Craig and I started talking about the story and breaking it down, I mentioned some of those to him, and he was wide-eyed like a fan and said, ‘Oh my God, we got to put these on the screen, we got to get them on the show,'” he said. I’m very happy that the story of Ashley Johnson‘s character, who plays Ellie’s mother, gets to continue.

After Merle Dandridge (who voiced Marlene in Parts 1 and 2) and Troy Baker (who portrayed Joel in Parts 1 and 2), Johnson is the third actor from the games to appear in The Last of Us. Johnson also voices the role of Pike in Amazon Prime‘s The Legend of Vox Machina.
