In two separate What If? Scenario, Wolverine and the Hulk defeated each other, but which victory was crueler between the two formidable heroes?
Wolverine and the Hulk have a long history together, with the mutant and the Jade Giant engaging in numerous brutal encounters. The two killed each other in two separate What If tales, but which victory was more brutal?
The What If series was developed to look at what may have happened if certain events in the Marvel Universe had played out differently. ‘What If Spider-Man Had Been a Traitor?’, ‘What If Iron Man Had Been a Traitor?’, and ‘What If Gwen Stacy Had Lived?’ are among the issues. Alternative perspectives on the universe were well-received. The comic is now being adapted into an animated series for Disney+. What if Wolverine defeated the Hulk and vice versa was the subject of one of What If’s most violent series.
‘What Would Have Happened if Wolverine Killed the Hulk?’ (What If #31) takes fans back to Wolverine’s debut appearance in The Incredible Hulk #181. While the two heroes continue to fight as they did in the original comic, Wolverine chooses to kill his opponent by repeatedly slashing his neck with his claws. Hulk is shockingly slain after his throat is cut. Following the murder, Wolverine joins the Brotherhood of Evil rather than the X-Men, and the issue concludes with Logan killing Magneto after he attacked Jean Grey. Magento uses the last of his strength to unsheath Wolverine’s claws and plunge them into his neck as he is about to die.
The story of ‘What If? The Hulk Killed Wolverine’ (What If Vol.2 #50) was told more than a decade later. During a mission in Dallas, Wolverine dispatches the Hulk in a flash. After appearing to be vanquished, the Hulk returns to his feet and begins pounding Wolverine with all of his might. Hulk snatches Logan’s head and snaps his adamantium neck, instantly killing him. In a battle against the X-Men later in the novel, Hulk murdered Blob, Super Sabre, Pyro, and Avalanche. Bruce Banner eventually wakes up in a field and is arrested for murder.
Both killings were unexpectedly swift but horrible in the end. The Hulk severed Logan’s adamantium spine while Wolverine sliced the Hulk’s throat. It’s a toss-up between which is more savage, although the Hulk snapping Wolverine’s unbreakable neck is fairly awful. Even if it led him down a terrible path, Wolverine’s victory seemed a touch too simple. Before Hulk destroyed his opponent, he was nearly defeated. The Hulk’s death is more severe in this scenario. Even in a What If scenario, Wolverine killing the Hulk with his claws is impressive.
