Sherman Alexie Controversy: Sherman Alexie Made an Apology Following Sexual Harassment Claims!

Public documents show that three female authors have accused the well-known Native American novelist Sherman Alexie of sexual harassment.

Alexie, the winner of the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner medal, issued an apology last week after receiving several anonymous and generalized allegations of abuse. Even though no women had yet spoken to the media on the record, Seattle author Litsa Dremousis stated on Twitter that several women had contacted her to tell their stories.

According to Alexie’s statement

Some of the individuals I love the most have been damaged by my actions throughout the years. In case I offended you in any way, please accept my heartfelt apologies. For that, please accept my deepest condolences. Nonetheless, he did not take into account what his ex-girlfriend Dremousis had dubbed “the allegations, insinuations, and outright lies.”

The American radio network NPR claimed to have interviewed ten different women about Alexie, albeit the vast majority of them asked to remain nameless for their own safety. Three authors have gone on the record with NPR so far.

According to NPR, “the women said Alexie had traded on his literary celebrity to lure them into uncomfortable sexual situations,” which included “inappropriate comments both in private and in public,” “flirting that veered suddenly into sexual territory,” “unwanted sexual advances,” and “consensual sexual relations” that ended abruptly.

The Unauthorized Autobiography of a. Sherman Alexie, an Indian author who has achieved international acclaim, did not respond to NPR’s numerous attempts to contact him.

Native American author Erika Wurth told NPR that around the age of 22, Alexie asked her to one of his readings and then, a year later, tried to kiss her and invited her to his room. He’s kind of disrobing me at the moment and kissing me, she told NPR. And I’m trying to convince myself that it’s fine. Since that isn’t working, and I’m also a little scared of this situation, I’ve decided to come clean and disclose that I’m a virgin.

Strangeness ensued, though, as he persisted in trying to work me over as I merely stood there. For me, that was the moment he realized that he would have to violate me and rape me before we could have sex. The good news is that he did in fact cease. According to NPR, she abandoned their relationship years later when a second sexual experience also ended badly.

Elissa Washuta, a writer, claims that Alexie informed her, “he could have sex with me if he wanted to.” However, he used a harsher phrase beginning with the letter F. You have to understand that he did not say this softly or in a whisper. It appears that our conversation was audible to the other party. It was hard for me to believe that someone would speak to me in that way. This older, more powerful man was a stranger to me.

According to poet and educator Jeanine Walker, Alexie and she became friends after she arranged for him to visit a class and he later asked her to email him a copy of her poetry. She found him “right behind me, and just like physically very much in my space… ” when she went to change after their game of basketball. Asking me whether he may kiss me, he leaned in for a close encounter.

It’s just that, you know, we’re playing basketball, and you remind me of the girlfriends I had back in high school, he added as he pushed on, grinning and sweating and laughing. In response, I backed away and said “no,” but he persisted. And all I could say was, “Well, Sherman, we’re not in high school. That’s what Walker said. Alexie apologized for his actions later.

After the allegations against Alexie surfaced last month, the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe announced that it will rename its Sherman Alexie scholarship.

Many young adult authors, including Alexie, have been accused of sexual harassment in recent years. Publishers in the United States and the United Kingdom dropped James Dashner when claims surfaced about him online. The literary agency that represented Thirteen Reasons Why author Jay Asher sacked him when the allegations of sexual harassment surfaced, despite the fact that a spokeswoman for the agency denied the allegations and said they had discovered no proof of abuse.
