Joss Whedon Controversy: Everything That Has Been Revealed Concerning the Alleged Abusive Behavior of ‘Justice League’ Director Joss Whedon

The new article on Joss Whedon that appeared in the “Vulture” section of New York Magazine has rehashed the difficulties that the famous director has been facing over the past few years.

Whedon was famous and held a high level of respect for his work as a writer and director on television shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly, as well as movies such as Marvel’s The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

It all came crumbling down as actors and staff members who had previously worked with him came forward with allegations of abuse and other forms of mistreatment they had experienced while working on his sets. Regarding those accusations, this is the first time he has ever made his position public.

At a time when men predominated in the action and science fiction realms, Whedon was once revered for inventing characters who gave off the appearance of being feminist on the surface. Fans held the misconception that he was a feminist supporter for a very long time; but, throughout the years, many who had worked with him and his ex-wife, Kai Cole, told a different narrative.

The previous year, star Ray Fisher of Justice League came up with allegations against the director, claiming that he was responsible for creating a toxic work atmosphere on production and describing Joss Whedon’s treatment of the cast and crew as “gross, nasty, and unprofessional.”

After that, Charisma Carpenter, an actress known for her roles in Buffy and Angel, described her ordeal of surviving mental and emotional abuse at the hands of Whedon. Since then, a number of other actors, writers, and crew workers, including Michelle Trachtenberg and Gal Gadot, have spoken publicly about their experiences working with the filmmaker.

It would appear that the director’s attempt to explain his side of the story in the article published in New York magazine was unsuccessful because he played down some of the allegations and bad contacts that people claimed to have had with him and did not provide an apology for his behavior.

Whedon’s history of allegedly harassing, threatening, and body-shaming others has placed a shade on his contributions and affected the way that some people look at his earlier work. This has cast a shadow over his contributions.

Here is all you need to know about the allegations that have been made against Whedon, as well as everything that has transpired since those allegations were first made.

Whedon’s Ex-Wife Kai Cole Has Something to Say About Him.

In August of 2017, Kai Cole contributed to The Wrap by writing a guest blog post with the subject “Joss Whedon Is a Hypocrite Preaching Feminist Ideals.” She revealed the “secret affairs” he was having on the set of Buffy, and she claimed that he told her about other affairs he had after the popular show came to an end with other actresses, co-workers, fans, and friends of his.

She opened up about the “secret affairs” he was having on the set of Buffy. According to Cole, whose relationship with Whedon ended in 2012, her ex-partner used feminism as a shield for his extramarital affairs. She claimed that “He always had a lot of female friends, but he told me it was because his mother raised him as a feminist, so he simply liked women better.”

“He told me it was because his mother raised him as a feminist, so he just liked women better.” Cole stated that he had written to her at one point and told her the following: “When I was running Buffy, I was surrounded by attractive, needy, aggressive young ladies.”

It was as if I were suffering from an illness, like something out of an ancient Greek epic. Suddenly I am a strong producer, and the world is spread out at my feet; nevertheless, I am unable to make use of this opportunity. In response to the blog post that was published at the time, a spokeswoman for Whedon stated that the essay “contains falsehoods and misrepresentations.”

“Out of worry for his children and out of respect for his ex-wife,” the filmmaker chose not to react at the moment the question was asked.

During his conversation with Vulture, he provided his thoughts on the article. According to what he had to say, “I was made a target by my ex-wife, and people exploited it in a cynical manner.” “She sent out a letter claiming some awful things I’d done and saying some incorrect things about me, but I had done the bad things, and so people knew I was gettable,” said the author of the letter.

He also discussed the affairs he had while working on the set of Buffy. He expressed his displeasure with the situation by saying, “I feel fucking bad about them,” adding that “it throws up the power dynamic.” He also said that he felt compelled to have sexual relations with the women because he was “powerless” to resist doing so.

He stated that he would have “always [regretted] it” if he had passed up the opportunity to have sexual encounters with attractive ladies. He claimed that he would have “always [regretted] it.”

At the beginning of his career, he was able to get the approval and respect of a large number of followers thanks to his portrayal of women, in which he made them look to be powerful and courageous; however, all of that changed 20 years later.

Over the course of his career, he was subjected to a certain amount of criticism for the manner in which his characters were made to endure tremendous hardships, such as being assaulted, in order for them to emerge “stronger.”

Then, the particulars of what was occurring behind the scenes on these events quickly came to light, which tarnished his reputation as a supporter of women. The idea of his program Dollhouse, which debuted in 2009 and starred Eliza Dushku, caused a few eyebrows to be raised. The plot of the show revolved around a mysterious establishment known as the Dollhouse.

There, women who are employed there as “actives” have their identities obliterated so that they can be used to fulfill the whims of powerful and affluent individuals. The memories of the actives were repeatedly wiped clean after each assignment to ensure that they had no remembrance of the things that they were compelled to do. After two seasons, the show was pulled from the air.

In the year 2021, Dushku also posted a lengthy comment on Instagram commending Carpenter for revealing her life story.

Whedon was also attacked in 2015 for the storyline of Black Widow in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Some people said that it was misogynistic, and it was included in the film. Soon after that, Whedon canceled his account on Twitter. He stated that he had been “attacked by radical feminists” ever since he joined Twitter, and as a result, the criticism didn’t disturb him.

He made this statement in an interview with BuzzFeed. He denied leaving the social media platform because of the criticism. “Every strain of feminism is criticizing every other strain of feminism… because heaven forbid they should all come together and genuinely fight for the cause.”

In June of 2017, a Wonder Woman script that he had written in 2006 and had stored away was discovered, and people criticized him for his simplistic version of the superhero. After hearing that there was a backlash, Whedon responded by telling Variety, “I don’t know specific bits people didn’t like, but I went and reread the screenplay.” I think that it’s wonderful.

League when Zack Snyder walked away from the project after the suicide of his daughter and gave him the opportunity to take up the directing duties. According to a piece of writing that Fisher produced at the time, “Joss Wheadon’s on-set attitude of the cast and crew of Justice League was disgusting, abusive, unprofessional, and utterly unacceptable.

” [citation needed] “In many different ways, Geoff Johns and Jon Berg made it possible for him to succeed. Accountability is more important than entertainment. In January of 2021, Fisher made the announcement that he would not be continuing his role as Cyborg on The Flash.

Additionally, he attacked the head of DC Films, Walter Hamada, claiming that Hamada is “the most dangerous type of enabler” and stating that he would never work with Hamada again.

In an interview with Forbes that took place in October 2020, Fisher discussed his time spent working with Joss Whedon on the reshoots for the Justice League movie. He stated that “race was just one of the issues with the reshoot process,” which he said included removing Cyborg’s backstory and digitally lightening Fisher’s skin tone.

Fisher was quoted as saying that “race was just one of the issues.” He continued by saying, “There were major blow-ups, threats, coercion, taunting, dangerous working conditions, and denigrating like you wouldn’t believe.” Fisher also asserted that Whedon was critical of Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins after Gal Gadot voiced her disagreement with certain alterations that were made to her role.

Whedon said to Vulture that he removed Cyborg’s story from the movie because it “logically made no sense.” He also stated that he brightened everything in post-production, not just the actor’s skin, as a result of this decision.

He referred to the statements made by the actor as “a malignant force,” and he said, “We’re talking about a horrible actor in both meanings.” On Twitter, Fisher provided his response to the news, writing, “Looks like Joss Whedon got to direct an endgame after all.”

After that, he wrote the following: “Rather than addressing all of the lies and buffoonery today—I will be commemorating the legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” The work will continue the next day. #MLKDay A>E.”

Whedon had the opportunity to work with a number of notable actors at the beginning of his career on the aforementioned shows. These actors have since come up in favor of Fisher and recounted their own experiences with the director. According to James Marsters, who played the beloved vampire Spike on Buffy, Whedon allegedly backed him into a wall.

It appears that Whedon was furious at how popular the actor’s role had become among fans. Marsters shared his account of the event on the podcast titled “Inside of You” hosted by Michael Rosenbaum in the month of July 2020. He remarked, “I came along, and I wasn’t supposed to be a romantic character, but then the audience reacted that way to it.” “I came along, and I wasn’t designed to be a loved figure.”

“And I remember him backing me up against a wall one day, and he was just like, ‘I don’t care how popular you are, kid, you’re dead.’ “And I remember him saying that to me. Do you take notes? Dead. Dead!’ To which he said, “Uh, you know, it’s your football, man.” OK.’” According to him, the director never offered an apology.

For the first four seasons of the show Buffy, Sophia Crawford served as Sarah Michelle Gellar’s stunt double. In the year 2020, Crawford disclosed to Metro that she had dated Josh Pruitt, who worked in the field of stunt coordination. She claimed that Whedon presented her with the option to either put an end to it or quit the series, and she chose the latter option.

According to Pruitt, the director warned them that after this incident, “No one will ever hire you again.” Cynthia Bergstrom, who was in charge of the costumes for Buffy, related a scenario in which she said that Joss Whedon and Sarah Michelle Gellar couldn’t come to an agreement over the outfit that Gellar’s character should wear.

According to what Bergstrom said in an interview with Vulture, “Sarah was adamant about it being a specific way.” “The costume she wanted to wear looked a little bit like something a grandmother might wear, with a high neck and a pleated skirt.

He was adamant that it should have a more seductive vibe.” Whedon apparently took his displeasure out on the costume designer when Gellar continued to want to test a variety of different alternatives, which led to him becoming agitated. “I was like, ‘Joss, let’s just get her dressed.’

He grabbed my arm and sank his fingers into the skin with such force that his fingernails left marks, prompting me to tell him, “You’re hurting me.” In response to those allegations presented in the publication, he stated, “I won’t be.”

A number of performers who had previously collaborated with Whedon on those projects came out in support of Fisher and expressed their own personal recollections of the filmmaker. It was said that Whedon shoved actor James Marsters up against a wall at one point because he was upset about how popular Marsters’ Spike character had become among Buffy fans.

Marsters made an appearance on the Inside of You podcast with Michael Rosenbaum in July 2020 to discuss the event and tell its story.

Despite the fact that he had no intention of playing a romantic interest, he noted that “the audience responded that way.” As for me, I remember him putting me in front of the wall one day and telling me, “No matter how popular you are, you’re dead.”

I can still recall that moment. “Are you listening to what I’m trying to say? Dead. Dead!’ That was the only thing I could think of to say in response to his saying, “Uh, man, it’s your football.” OK.’” He asserted that the director never exhibited any sign of remorse.

Sophia Crawford filled the role of Sarah Michelle Gellar’s stunt double for the first four seasons of Buffy. In an interview with Metro magazine in the year 2020, Crawford revealed that she had a romantic relationship with stunt coordinator Josh Pruitt for the preceding two years. She made the decision to back out after Whedon presented her with an impossible choice. Pruitt, quoting the director, warned that after what had happened, “no one will ever hire you again.”

A story was told by Buffy’s costume designer, Cynthia Bergstrom, concerning a dispute that occurred between producer Joss Whedon and actress Sarah Michelle Gellar regarding the clothing that the characters wore when they were filming the program.

According to Bergstrom’s comments in an interview with Vulture, Sarah was “adamant” that a certain approach should be followed. “She wished for a dress in the style of her grandmother, complete with a high collar and a pleated skirt. She explained that he wanted it to have a more alluring quality.

Whedon allegedly lost his temper and punched the costume designer when Gellar insisted on attempting further alternates. Gellar’s insistence led to Whedon’s loss of control. Then, “I said to myself, ‘Oh my God, I’ve got to get her dressed,'” the narrator says.

I told him, “You’re hurting me,” as soon as he started driving his nails into my arm with his fingernails. In reaction to the accusations that were made in the article, he stated, “I don’t believe it.” I can guarantee that I would lose my temper, but I’ve never physically abused another person.

During a lengthy interview,  Charisma Carpenter, who plays one of the main characters on Angel, expressed her opinion that she was treated unfairly by the producers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the series Angel, which is a spin-off of Buffy.

Carpenter released an official statement on his Twitter account in February of 2021, in which he claimed that he had been “casually cruel” to the woman, that he had made “ongoing, passive-aggressive threats to terminate her,” and that he had made “fat” comments in front of coworkers when she was four months pregnant. This statement was published in February of 2021.

According to her account, when she was pregnant, Whedon “manipulatively weaponized” her womanhood and faith against her and questioned whether or not she would “keep it.” It came as a surprise to her when he fired her from the show the season after she gave birth to her child because she was carrying his child at the time.

They proceeded to Speak out On Behalf of The Buffy Cast and Crew:

Many of Carpenter’s co-stars from Buffy, including Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played the titular role in Buffy, have spoken out in his support. In February of 2021, Gellar claimed in a comment that she posted on Instagram that “I am delighted to have my name connected with Buffy Summers, but I don’t want to be permanently tied with the name Joss Whedon.”

There will be no further statements made at this time since my primary concern right now is for my family and how well we will be able to weather a pandemic. “However, I am delighted that everyone who has survived abuse is speaking forward, and I stand with them,”

In the episode, Tara Maclay, played by Benson, wrote something along the lines of what Carpenter had said, saying that “Buffy was a toxic workplace and it starts at the top.” My highest respect and adoration are reserved for @AllCharisma due to the fact that she is speaking the truth.

Twenty years later, many of us are still struggling with the ramifications of what happened during that period. In response to the accusations made against Joss, Firefly writer Jose Molina commented that the phrase “casually brutal” is an excellent way to characterize Joss.

During the reshoots for Justice League in 2017, an unnamed insider allegedly revealed to the Hollywood Reporter that Joss Whedon made a threat against Gal Gadot’s career. Whedon reportedly continued to encourage Gadot to record the lines even after she expressed concern that her Wonder Woman character would be harmed by their inclusion. In May of 2021, Gadot checked the report to make sure it was accurate.

That’s the kind of conversation I had with him.” The following are some of the comments made by Gadot during an interview with the Israeli news network N12, as cited by The Hollywood Reporter: “I took care of it there and then.
