Fresh Off the Boat Controversy: Instance Wu Accuses ‘fresh Off the Boat’ Producer of Sexual Harassment and Intimidation!
During the first two seasons of “Fresh Off the Boat,” Constance Wu claimed that a producer sexually harassed and threatened her.
On Friday, at The Atlantic Festival, Wu addressed the allegations while promoting her upcoming memoir, “Making a Scene.” Wu, 40, shot to fame in 2015 thanks to her role as Jessica Huang on the hit ABC comedy. The show ran for six seasons.
Although Wu initially was “reluctant” to publish the claims in her memoir, she did so at her publisher’s urging.
Wu added, “I eventually recognized it was essential to talk about because I did have a really horrible experience my first couple years on that show, and nobody knew about it because the program was historic for Asian Americans.
Wu elaborated, saying, “I did not want to sully the reputation of the one show we had representing us.” The show had been the only one on network television with Asian American leads in over 20 years. “I kept quiet for a very long time about a lot of sexual harassment and intimidation that I experienced over the first two seasons of the show.”
We did not feel confident enough to speak out about the alleged harassment and intimidation until the play was a smashing success.

“I was finally able to say “no” to the harassment after the first two seasons when the show had proven itself and I no longer feared for my job. In response to the producer’s threats, we must say, “No.” “That’s what Wu said.
The “Crazy Rich Asians” star admitted she had difficulty coping with the fallout from the harassment allegations.
“In that moment, I thought to myself, “You know what? Everything is taken care of and no one needs to know how. There’s no need for me to ruin the name of this Asian American producer. I don’t need to tarnish the program’s image “I quote Wu. “Nonetheless, negative emotions don’t disappear simply because you decide they shouldn’t be there. They’ll emerge from somewhere.”
A controversial tweet of Wu’s from 2019 in which she expressed displeasure with the show’s renewal for a new season was discussed in the same session. According to Wu, the tweet was about the alleged harassment she experienced during filming.
“Since I had recently enjoyed the success of the film “Crazy Rich Asians,” the public’s perception of me was negatively impacted by the obscene and careless tweets I sent out. Oh, she thinks she’s a huge movie star, people say “The Chinese scholar Wu stated. “When I really wanted to start a show without having to deal with all these memories of abuse, I wanted a clean slate,” she said.
Insider’s request for comment from Wu and ABC representatives went unanswered for some time.
After airing for five years, the sitcom “Fresh Off the Boat” will be pulled from the air in 2020. Randall Park, Hudson Yang, Forrest Wheeler, and Ian Chen also appeared in the show.
The New York Times reports that Scribner, the publisher of “Making a Scene,” has set its release date for October 4.
