Zayn Malik is talking about how he feels about the breakup of One Direction as a boy band. During an interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast on Wednesday, the singer said that even though he now appreciates his time in the band, at one point, all five members were “sick of each other.”
“It was clear that our friendship had problems, too,” he said. “We spent every day together for five years.”
One Direction was made up of Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Liam Payne. They were put together by judges on The X Factor in 2010 after each of them auditioned for the singing competition show on their own. Even though they came in third on the show, the band went on to have a lot of success. They released five studio albums and had six top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 list.
Then, in 2015, Malik said that he was leaving the band to start his own solo singing career. He says now that he had “known for a minute” that he was going to do this before he left. After Malik left the group the next year, One Direction officially broke up.
The singer told podcast host, Alex Cooper, “I don’t want to get into too much detail, but there was a lot of politics going on.” “Some people were doing certain things, and some people didn’t want to sign contracts, so I knew something was going on. So, if I’m being honest with you, I just got ahead of the curve. I was like, ‘I’m just gonna get out of it. I think that’s all.’ And I had just seen it.”
Malik has put out three solo records since he left the band. They are Mind of Mine (2016), Icarus Falls (2018), and Nobody is Listening (2021). When he chose to leave One Direction, the singer also said, “If I’m being completely honest with you, I wanted to be the first person to go and make my own record.”
“I thought, ‘This is the first time I’m going to jump the gun.'” “I’m a calm guy, but when it comes to my singing and business, I’m serious and competitive. So, I wanted to be the first to go my own way.”
The other members of One Direction have also gone on to make solo music. Harry Styles’s latest record, Harry’s House, won Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards in 2023.

Now, more than a decade after one of the most famous boy bands was formed, Malik says he can look back and be proud of the memories he made during that time in his life.
“I look back on it now with a lot more fondness than I did when I was leaving,” he said. “There were great things that happened. I had a lot of fun with them, but I guess we’ve run our course.”
