John Mcafee Career:
Following his graduation from college in 1968, McAfee spent two years in New York City working at NASA’s Institute for Space Studies. He worked on the application as a programmer. His post-NASA careers included stints as an OS architect at Xerox and a software designer role at Univac. McAfee switched careers from programmer to consultant in 1978, when he started working for Computer Sciences Corporation. Then, from 1980 to 1982, he spent two years at the Booz Allen Hamilton consulting business.
At Lockheed, where he worked in the 1980s, McAfee first began creating anti-virus software. In particular, after obtaining a copy of the Brain computer virus, he commenced the development of anti-virus software. McAfee quit his employment in 1987 to found McAfee Associates, an anti-virus software provider for personal computers. Several years later, in 1992, the firm was officially incorporated in Delaware. He stayed for an additional two years after 1992, eventually leaving the company in 1994. Two years after McAfee’s colleagues went public, he sold his whole investment in the company for $100 million due to boredom with the software business.
With the merger of Network General and McAfee Associates in 1997, the new firm was called Network Associates. Network Associates became McAfee, Inc. seven years later. In August of 2010, Intel acquired McAfee Inc. Separate from Intel until January 2014, when McAfee-related products became known as Intel Security, the company continued to use its own name and logo. The business unit formerly known as McAfee, Inc. was spun out from Intel in 2017 as McAfee, LLC, a joint venture between Intel and TPG Capital.
Because of a string of disastrous investments, including a significant wager on Lehman Brothers’ bonds, McAfee lost millions and was forced to liquidate his real estate and other assets for a fraction of their original value. For instance, McAfee received only $5.7 million for the sale of a $25 million mansion in Colorado. He also parted with a Cessna private plane and a couple of ranches in New Mexico and Hawaii.
